Play #2

Capitalizing off of turnovers is critical to success.

Scoring touchdowns in the red zone, instead of field goals, is imperative in big games.

Our Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays: Play #2 combines both:

This was a creative play design and call to get wide receiver Jaelen Strong the ball. Strong lined up inside of wide receiver Cameron Smith. At the snap, Strong shuffled out several steps to make it look like a wide receiver screen while Smith cut inside to “rub” Strong’s defender. As Smith crossed in front of Strong, Strong released toward the pylon, and quarterback Taylor Kelly lobbed the ball up to where only Strong, and not the Notre Dame safety, could catch the ball. Strong made a tremendous, leaping, one handed catch for the touchdown, and he even got both feet down in the end-zone even though he only needed one.

This was the first Arizona State offensive play immediately following a defensive takeaway, our Play #11, and quarterback Kelly connected with wide receiver Strong for a red-zone touchdown which energized the home crowd while deflating the Fighting Irish.

Happy Holidays!
