Play #3

On the road against USC, it appeared, according to the Fox announcing crew, that USC had “put the game on ice” with 3:07 on the clock and a 34-25 lead. Thankfully for Sun Devil Nation, quarterback Mike Bercovici had other plans and at 0:19 in the following video, our Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays: Play #3 took place:

Bercovici showed showed some quick feet when rolling away from the pass rush and hit wide receiver Cameron Smith, who beat his defensive back to the ball, and turned it into a 73 yard touchdown reception keeping Arizona State in the game. In 14 seconds, the Sun Devils had pulled back within two points, down 34-32. Several things stand out regarding this play. Bercovici showed poise in the pocket, good movement away from the pass rush, and throwing accuracy on the run. Smith was able to make himself a target once Bercovici got flushed from the pocket, while showing tremendous focus on the ball through two defenders and excellent speed heading to the end zone. This Bercovici/Smith combination will be critical for the 2015 season as the Sun Devils lose senior quarterback Taylor Kelly and junior wide receiver Jaelen Strong, who may declared himself eligible for the NFL Draft yesterday.

Happy Holidays!
