“2014 Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays” – Play #9

During this month, every weekend is full of Holiday Parties, and this year, the ASU Devils Den happily and merrily brings back its “Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays”. These are the top 12 plays from the Arizona State season that you can enjoy talking about over delicious holiday cocktails with friends and family. The “Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays” will count down from Play #12 to our Play #1 as voted on by the ASU Devils Den team.

Play #12 – Brown’s One Handed Interception
Play #11 – Smallwood’s Strip Sack
Play #10 – Deandre Scott’s Forced Fumble

An interesting note regarding the first three plays of our Holiday Party 12 Pack, the plays came from players signed in the February 2014 signing day class.

Play #9

While our Play #11 by Tashon Smallwood started the defensive demolition of Notre Dame, 2014’s Holiday Party 12 pack of Plays: Play #9 starts at 0:44 in the following video:

With the Sun Devils up 17-3 and Notre Dame driving to get back into the game, senior safety Damarious Randall, who is always looking to get his hands on the ball, returns this tipped Everett Golson pass 59 yards for the defensive touchdown and a 24-3 lead.

While Randall made a terrific athletic play with his quick hands to catch the tipped ball, the defensive touchdown was a complete defensive team effort. Spur linebacker Christian Sam and boundary safety Jordan Simone are blitzing off the edge, so Golson immediately looks to the wide receiver on the opposite side of the field. Field side defensive end Marcus Hardison, knowing that the ball is likely being thrown away from the blitz gets his hands up into the throwing lane to the field side wide receiver and tips the Golson pass. This allows field safety Randall to snatch the ball out of the air and sprint into the end zone for a defensive touchdown. This defensive touchdown is a direct result of a the aggressive blitzing scheme of the Sun Devil defense.
