2014 Look Ahead: Quarterback

on

The 2013 season has concluded, and 2014 Signing Day is rapidly approaching on February 5th. Spring practice is right around the corner for the 2014 Sun Devils. Previously, the “2014 Look Ahead” blogs reviewed the defensive linelinebackers, and the secondary. The “2014 Look Ahead Series” continues on the offensive side of the ball with the quarterbacks.

Quarterbacks Leaving

  • Michael Eubank                         (Transfer to Samford)

Quarterbacks Returning

  • Taylor Kelly
  • Mike Bercovici

2014 Verbal Commitments

  • Manny Wilkins
  • Coltin Gerhart

Possible Class of 2014 Targets

  • None

For two years, the Sun Devils had three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, but most colleges prefer to have four. With the transfer of Eubank and the hopeful arrival of Wilkins and Gerhart, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Norvell has his four quarterbacks. In 2014, the Sun Devils will be led by returning two year starter Taylor Kelly. Kelly has started 27 straight games for the Sun Devils. Last season, the Sun Devil offense, under the leadership of Kelly, scored 41.0 points per game which was ninth in the nation. Overall, Kelly threw for 3635 yards for 28 touchdowns with 12 interceptions in 2013. This following a 2012 season where Kelly threw for 3040 yards and 29 touchdowns with 9 interceptions. On the ground, Kelly rushed for 608 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Bercovici, who probably had chances to transfer this off-season, will return as the back-up to Kelly. Last season, Bercovici made strides in running read-option, and he provides a nice safety net behind Kelly. Bercovici has his eyes on starting for the Sun Devils in 2015. After two straight years of not signing a quarterback, the 2014 Signing Class will include two quarterbacks. Manny Wilkins and Coltin Gerhart, if they stick to their verbal commitments, will join the program over the summer and serve as the scout team leaders in 2014. Quarterbacks are the hardest to truly judge from high school highlights. However, it is easy to see both of these quarterbacks succeeding in the Sun Devils offensive system after two years of development and coaching.

Heading into the 2014 season, the Sun Devils are extremely solid at the quarterback position with returning starter senior Taylor Kelly. Young quarterbacks Wilkins and Gerhart will have one full season to learn from Kelly before battling Mike Bercovici for the starting spot in 2015.

Disclaimer: The numbers for each position are not official. These are based on research and numbers can change based on multiple factors from now until Signing Day for a variety of reasons.
