2014 Signing: Coltin Gerhart

After not signing a quarterback in 2012, and Josh Dobbs backing out at the last minute and heading to Tennessee in 2013, head coach Todd Graham and offensive coordinator Mike Norvell have signed two quarterbacks this recruiting cycle. The first was Manny Wilkins, and the second is Coltin Gerhart. Gerhart, a 6’1″ 216 pounds senior from Norco, California, will battle Wilkins to be the future Sun Devil starter in 2015.

Gerhart is the youngest of six siblings in a very athletic family. Coltin’s older brothers are Toby Gerhart of the Minnesota Vikings, formerly Stanford Cardinal, and Garth Gerhart, the former Arizona State Sun Devil center. Coltin’s three older sisters all played Division 1 softball as Teagan and Kelsey played at Stanford while Whitley played at Cal Poly. Coltin is a two-sport star hoping to play both football and baseball at Arizona State, similar to brother Toby at Stanford.

Gerhart originally committed to Arizona State as a safety as he and his family felt that safety is the position that could put him in the NFL. However, after a strong senior season playing quarterback at Vista Murrieta, Gerhart decided to play quarterback in college. Nebraska wanted Gerhart to take over for fellow Southern Californian Taylor Martinez, but when offensive coordinator Mike Norvell told Gerhart the Arizona State offer would still be there as a quarterback, Gerhart solidified his commitment to the Sun Devils.

On the high school field, Gerhart’s highlight film shows that Gerhart can successfully execute the read-option. The read-option is significant part of Arizona State’s offense led by offensive coordinator Mike Norvell. While physically Gerhart may not be as fast or as tall as Wilkins, Gerhart shows great vision and shiftiness during his runs. Gerhart has the tools to compete for the starting quarterback position with the Sun Devils, and his battle with Manny Wilkins will be a great one to watch over the next few years.
