2014 Signing: Demario Richard

on

The running back position at Arizona State is very thin. Marion Grice is heading to the NFL, and running back Terrell Davis has transferred to the University of British Columbia. The only running back currently on the roster from Todd Graham’s first two classes is D.J. Foster, the 2014 starter. It was imperative for running backs coach Bo Graham to sign two dynamic running backs in ready to play in the fall in this recruiting class.

Demario Richard, from Palmdale High School in Palmdale, California, is a 5’10” 200 pound running back who chose the Sun Devils over reported offers from Michigan State, Utah, Washington, Nebraska, Oregon, Oregon State, and several other Division 1 schools. Richard was a four-star prospect according to Scout and ESPN and a three-star prospect per Rivals. According to MaxPreps.com stats page, in three years of varsity football for Palmdale High, Richard had 503 carries for 4251 yards and 63 touchdowns. Richard also participated in the Semper Fidelis All-Star game with quarterback Manny Wilkins.

With Foster stepping up to replace Grice, somebody has to fill Foster’s role. Richard could be utilized his freshman season in a similar fashion to the way Norvell used Foster in his All-American freshman season. Richard will play as a running back for some reps, but Richard could line up in the slot to run routes or get some fly sweeps as well. Long term, Richard should have great success as a playmaker in the Sun Devil offense which has effectively used multiple running backs in different ways. Richard’s highlights show a running back with power, good speed (not breakaway speed, more explosive speed), and the ability to catch passes out of the backfield a trait Sun Devils have seen a lot of from Norvell, Grice, and Foster.
