2015 ASU Recruiting Update #2

on

Our first 2015 Sun Devil Recruiting Update profiled the current verbal commitments to the Arizona State football program and projected how the class could finish out based on the current Sun Devil football roster by class. Since that post, linebackers Khaylan Thomas and Davon Durant have announced their pledge to join the 2015 Sun Devil recruiting class.

This Saturday’s game against Notre Dame is the biggest home contest for the Sun Devils this season, and many top high school prospects from around the nation will be officially visiting. While out of state talent will be learning more about the Sun Devils, in-state talent will also be on hand to witness the game, most likely unofficially. In-state recruiting still needs to be the foundation of the program, and Todd Graham stated his desire to “build a fence around Phoenix to keep region’s top talent”. The #StayTrueToASU campaign continues with DJ Foster and Tyler Whiley the current poster boys. However, Todd Graham and his staff must improve their in-state recruiting and not let top talent leave the state.

In 2013, top Arizona players who left the state were five-star defensive back Priest Willis, UCLA, four-star defensive back Cole Luke, Notre Dame, four-star quarterback Tyler Bruggman, Wazzu, and four-star wide receiver Devon Allen, Oregon. Arizona State signed two of the top eleven local high school stars: Chans Cox and Grant Martinez.

In 2014, top Arizona players who left the state were five-star quarterback Kyle Allen, Texas A&M, five-star offensive lineman Casey Tucker, Stanford, four star defensive end Qualen Cunningham, Texas A&M, and four-star wide receiver Mark Andrews, Oklahoma. Arizona State signed three of the top fifteen local high school stars: Tyler Whiley, Quinn Bailey, and Ismael Murphy-Richardson.

Looking forward into the 2015 class, Arizona State has the verbal commitment from three of the top eleven local stars: Chandler High School quarterback Bryce Perkins, Gilbert High School offensive lineman Steve Miller, and Williams Field offensive lineman Cade Cote. However, many top players have announced their intention to leave the state

  • Offensive lineman Keenan Walker – Arizona
  • Quarterback Brian Lewerke – Michigan State
  • Defensive End / Outside Linebacker Cassius Peat – UCLA
  • Offensive lineman Jake Grant – Utah
  • Outside linebacker Caleb Peart – Vanderbilt

These uncommitted Arizona high school prospects in the class of 2015 are who Head Coach Todd Graham and recruiting coordinator Chip Long would love to see in the maroon and gold:

  • Five-star wide receiver Christian Kirk
  • Four-star running back Paul Lucas
  • Three-star linebacker Dedrick Young

There exists plenty of time from now until 2015 Signing Day, so the Arizona State coaching staff has time to increase its number of local commitments. Kirk is the consensus star, and securing his commitment is critical to putting up the fence around the state.
