2015 ASU Recruiting Update #3

on

The first 2015 Sun Devil Recruiting Update profiled the current verbal commitments to the Arizona State football program and projected how the class could finish out based on the current Sun Devil football roster by class. The second 2015 Sun Devil Recruiting Update examined the success of in-state recruiting for the Sun Devil coaching staff. Now, the third 2015 Sun Devil Recruiting Update looks at Arizona State recruiting nationally.

With two weeks left until the winter dead period, which starts December 15, the Arizona State staff is on the road recruiting.

As you can see from their tweets, Assistant Athletics Director for Recruiting Patrick Suddes and Recruiting Coordinator Chip Long both mention “coast to coast”. How “coast to coast” are the Sun Devils?

The figure above shows the home locations of the 2014 Signing Day class in blue and home cities of the current 2015 verbal commitment recruiting class in red. For junior college players in either class, the location of their junior college was pinned on the map. While the majority of recruits come from California and Arizona, the Sun Devil coaching staff is reaching for key prospects in Texas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Across the 2014 and possible 2015 recruiting class, the straight line distance from Portland, Oregon (2014 Connor Humphreys) to Virginia Beach, Virgina (2015 Jaason Lewis) is 2467 miles. Yes, the Sun Devils coaching staff is recruiting “coast to coast”.

The sustained success of the Sun Devils over the past two seasons is part of the reason that Sun Devil nation is expanding across the nation. Whether it be the Nike uniforms or the football series against Notre Dame or the constant ranking in the polls, the Sun Devils are going national. In fact, the Sun Devils appeared on national TV, ESPN or Fox operated channels, for the majority of the season. Only the games against Weber State and Washington State were on Pac-12 Networks. The success of the team and the hard-working coaching staff have helped the Arizona State football program begin to grow “coast to coast”.

While the ability to brand is important, the coaching staff is still aggressively recruiting close to home. This could be a great holiday season for the coaching staff as local star, WR Christian Kirk, will announce his college choice December 17. Kirk was recently just ranked the #29 player in the nation according to Rivals.com, and he will be choosing between Arizona State, USC, UCLA, and Auburn. Also, top California wide receiver, Trent Irwin, could announce his decision between Arizona State and Stanford in December. Irwin, the 42nd ranked player in the nation according to Rivals.com, is a high school teammate of Sun Devil verbal commit quarterback Brady White.

With the regular season complete, the Sun Devil coaching staff is recruiting “coast to coast” and hoping for verbal commitments this holiday season from some of the best players across the country.
