“ASU Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays” – Play #8

Hanukkah and Christmas celebrations of 2013 have passed, but Kwanzaa is on-going and everyone is preparing for a New Year. We continue our month long celebration of the 2013 Sun Devil season with the latest installment of our “ASU Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays“.

Play #8

Mid-November saw the Oregon State Beavers come down to Tempe for a key Pac-12 match-up for both schools. For Arizona State, it was critical that the Sun Devils secure this victory and not look ahead to the following week’s pivotal Pac-12 South match-up at UCLA.

Arizona State was up soundly 20-3 at the half. However, the Sun Devils came out flat to start the third quarter and the Beavers marched right down the field for a touchdown to make it a 20-10 game. The stadium was unsettled as the Beavers hung around into the fourth quarter. After a Zane Gonzalez field goal made it 23-10,Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion got the ball with 5:16 left in the game. Then the “ASU Devils Den Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays” Play #8 took place:

Mannion decided to throw to an out route on the far side of the field. Mannion has a strong arm, but cornerback Robert Nelson made the read and quickly broke to the ball, and Nelson did not stop until he had a game clinching interception return for a touchdown. Mannion had already thrown interceptions to Nelson, safety Alden Darby, and safety Damarious Randall. Nelson went on to win Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts against Oregon State, and after the season, Nelson received 1st Team All Pac-12 honors. This was a huge statement play from Robert Nelson who had to battle for the starting field corner start in pre-season.

Great choice for play #8! Robert Nelson is going to be missed. It's been an uphill struggle for him his entire time here as a Sun Devil but he really brought it this year.
