ASU Quarterback Future Bright

After missing out on quarterback recruits in his first two recruiting classes (2012 and 2013), head coach Todd Graham and offensive coordinator Mike Norvell are loading up at the quarterback position. The 2014 Signing Day class brings quarterbacks Manny Wilkins and Coltin Gerhart to Tempe this fall. Now, the class of 2015 has received two highly ranked verbal commitments from quarterbacks Bryce Perkins and Brady White.

The Chandler High School star Perkins committed to the Sun Devils on April 2, 2014. Perkins is a dynamic quarterback who is growing into the position. Perkins shows tremendous athleticism with his 6’3″ 200 pound frame as he runs around the field, and his passing has made a huge strides from his sophomore to junior seasons. He continues to work on his throwing mechanics and touch so that he can become a true quarterback and not just an athlete playing quarterback. Bryce Perkins highlights can be found here.

Perkins received an early offer from Graham and Norvell during his sophomore season at Chandler High:

That early offer paid off for the Sun Devil coaching staff with the early verbal commitment from Perkins, a local star in Arizona. Most importantly, Perkins told the Arizona Republic’s Richard Obert that “I want to stay home and be a home-town hero. ASU needs Arizona boys. I’m hoping I can be the spark for that.”

Then on May 2, 2014, quarterback Brady White, from Newhall, California, announced his verbal commitment to Arizona State. Brady White highlights can be found here. There is a lot of traits to love. White is a gunslinger from the pocket who can throw accurately to all levels. White’s highlights show great mobility while keeping his eyes down field, and he is not afraid to take off and run down the field if the defense gives it to him. White has the arm strength and athleticism in the pocket that offensive coordinators seek. White made his decision after two unofficial visits to Tempe this summer, and the second visit was with his favorite high school target, wide receiver Trent Irwin. Irwin is strongly considering Arizona State as well.

According to the current pro-style quarterback rankings, White is ranked third overall in the class of 2015 which would be the highest ranked Sun Devil quarterback commit ever. This is a critical verbal commitment for the Sun Devils to keep up with its Pac-12 South rivals USC and UCLA.

The Pac-12 is known for its offense and offense starts at the quarterback position. The competition at the quarterback position will be fierce between these four Sun Devils of Wilkins, Gerhart, Perkins, and White, but anything can happen between now and the end of the Taylor Kelly era. Gerhart could go play professional baseball if he is drafted high enough this summer, or Gerhart could move to safety. Perkins could move to an H-Back position if his passing development stunts. Anything can truly happen, but with these four, the quarterback future is looking bright at Arizona State.
