Episode 23 Addendum

on

While judging the 2012 ASU Signing Day class, I gave a “C+”ish grade which agreed with most publications.  Nationally, the recruiting class is in the 35 – 45 range, and we really want it higher, especially with 6 other Pac-12 schools in the top 25.  Additionally, I stated that ASU fans should give Todd Graham and his staff a high B for the class due to the short time to recruit to ASU and the amazing effort they put in.  They retained key players like Evan Goodman and four of the Long Beach Poly 5, locked up DJ Foster, while maintaining key high school pipelines like Corona Centennial and restarting others (Chandler Hamilton and Euless Trinity in Texas).

While listening back to this episode and reviewing my notes, I completely forgot something key to point out to Sun Devil Nation.  In every publication, the 2012 Sun Devil recruiting class is HIGHER than the 2012 UofA recruiting class.  Even with the possible addition of Davonte Neal, it is not expected for the Mildcats to jump over the Sun Devils in the rankings.  This is ABSOLUTELY HUGE for Todd Graham in his staff as they hit Arizona hard for the 2013 class.  Rich-Rod was in place 23 days before Todd Graham.  That’s an eternity in the recruiting world . . . three weeks of planning, preparation,  and conversations.  Not to mention, Todd Graham was hired hours before a dead period.  Furthermore, national media was positively hyping the hiring of Rich-Rod, and Pac-12 media was calling UofA an instant contender in the Pac-12 South.  While Todd Graham was hired in a storm of negative national media that still today continues with single quips from a four-letter-sports-powerhouse and their famous broadcasters in other sports (yes Dick Vitale, drop it).

While UofA’s class does reside from all around the United States with players from Hawaii, Texas, Louisiana, Okalahoma, Pennsylvania, and Florida, the ASU class is higher ranked, and more importantly, filled with stronger Arizona players.  That is yet another reason for those of us in Sun Devil nation to feel good about the path of our program.
