“Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays” – Plays #11 and #12

Happy New Year! The last part of 2013 or the first part of 2014 ends our month long celebration of the 2013 Arizona State Sun Devil football season with the final installment of our “ASU Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays“.  Plays #11 and #12 both come from the Territorial Cup against the University of Arizona Wildcats, so once again, very happily though, in Rob and Don style, it’s two-fisting time.

November 30, 2013 was the date of the Territorial Cup match-up between Arizona State and the University of Arizona. The Sun Devils started the game on fire finished the first half with a 30-7 lead.

Play 11

After the half, the Wildcats gained momentum, and the home crowd in Tempe started to get uneasy. Arizona quarterback B.J. Denker led the Wildcats on a touchdown drive to bring the game to 30-14. The Arizona State offense under quarterback Taylor Kelly stalled again. Denker took over and got the Wildcats moving, but then the “ASU Devils Den Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays” Play #11 took place.

The Wildcats were finding third down success using slants, and the Wildcats had a bunch formation to Denker’s left. Arizona State safety Damarious Randall signaled to the rest of the defensive backfield that he had the inside receiver. After the snap, Randall read Denker and jumped the slant route for an interception. Randall took the ball 64 yards down the field to complete the interception return touchdown play. This tremendous read by Randall sucked all the momentum and life out of the Arizona Wildcats in their comeback efforts.

Play 12

Arizona State offensive coordinator Mike Norvell put quarterback Taylor Kelly in position to ice the game. With one on one coverage between top Sun Devil wide receiver Jaelen Strong and to Wildcat defensive back Shaq Richardson, Strong ran the homerun post route, and Kelly hit him in stride. With 1:17 left in the 3rd quarter, Strong had a 61 yard touchdown pass from Kelly which forced Wildcat fans to leave Sun Devil Stadium early.
