November 2011 Review

29 – 28  Loss

ASU lost to the Bruins, in the Rose Bowl, falling just short on a missed FG by Alex Garroutte, his 3rd miss of the game.  UCLA pulls off this key Pac12 South shocker starting to believe when ahead 16-14 at the half.  This is the same UCLA Bruins team who was embarrassed in a 36 point loss, 2 weeks earlier by the UofA.  The ASU secondary got torched in the 2nd half, even though UCLA is not a throwing offense.  Bruin WR Nelson Rosario went 76 yards, uncovered, for a TD to start the 2nd half.  The key play in the game was the Bruins converting a 3rd and 29 to Rosario on a back shoulder fade by Alden Darby.  This game also marked a mis-management of time by head coach Dennis Erickson as he lost 25-35 seconds on the lack of time out calls.  Cameron Marshall ran for 168 yards, as this was the first Sun Devil loss when Marshall ran for more than 100 yards.  Gerrell Robinson went for 131 yards receiving.  The Sun Devils moved to 4-2 in Pac12 play, but UCLA is in the drivers seat with the head to head win.

ASU at Wazzou
37 – 27  Loss

The Devils traveled up to Pullman, WA to play in the snow, but fell down horribly.  Last week, Wazzou was only able to grab 223 yards on offense, yet the Cougars roll up over 500 on the Sun Devils.  A redshirt FR QB threw for 494 yards and 4 TDs.  The Cougar defense had given up a 100 yard rusher in SIX STRAIGHT WEEKS, yet Cameron Marshall, behind his atrocious offensive line, could only get 37 yards on 16 carries.  Gerrell Robinson shined again on offense going for 158 yards and 1 TD.  Will Sutton led the defense with his usual emotion and fire getting 4 tackles and 1 sack from his DT position.  The game could be summarized by a late Sun Devil offensive drive where Brock drives them down the field, overcoming offensive line issues, and hits George Bell in the endzone on a wide open slant that Bell drops.  Alex Garroutte then misses the short FG attempt.  The Sun Devils fall to 4-3 in Pac12 play.

ASU vs UofA
31 – 27  Loss

Territorial Cup contest in Tempe where ASU gives up a 27-17 lead to fall to their hated rivals in the final seconds thanks to costly turnovers, untimely penalties, and more missed tackles.  An offensive game as the teams combined for over 1000 yards.  Gerrell Robinson led the offense with 11 catches for 199 yards.  Junior Onyeali was called for yet another PF Late Hit on the QB, and he was replaced by Carl Bradford who stepped up with two tackles for loss, one of those a big sack.  Brock Osweiler ended the game with 487 yards passing, but he came out extremely flat with 2 quick interceptions.  The Sun Devils continue their fall, moving to 4-4 in Pac12 play.

ASU vs Cal
47 – 38  Loss

The final game of the regular season took place the Friday night after Thanksgiving, and Jeff Tedford’s Cal Bears were ready to play.  Cal rolled up 484 yards of total offense, including a whopping 247 on the ground, while scoring a TD or FG on 9 of their 12 drives.  Defensively, Junior Onyeali had another late hit on the QB personal foul and Vontaze Burfict had two more personal fouls.  Burfict ended up benched for the last 23 minutes of the game. Two Sun Devils stepped up offensively as Cameron Marshall, who left the field mid-game with another leg injury, had 157 yards rushing and 2 TDs.  Rashad Ross found his spot on the outside of the field, getting 108 yards and 1 TD on 5 receptions.  The Sun Devils finish without a win in November, defensively giving up just short of 2000 total yards, and end their first season in the Pac 12 with a 4-5 record.

On November 28, Athletic Director Lisa Love announced that the football program will go through a “Change in Leadership” as Dennis Erickson will not return for the 2012 season.
