October 2011 Review

ASU vs Oregon State
35 – 20  Win

ASU started off with its first three drives being cut short due to turnovers by Brock Osweiler, two interceptions and one fumble.  The Sun Devils found themselves down 13-0, 20 seconds into the 2nd quarter at home to a winless team and a freshman quarterback making his first career road start.  Then, the real ASU showed up led by Jamal Miles and his 249 all purpose yards.  Miles had 62 yards receiving on 8 receptions to go with 45 yards on 6 rushes.  Miles made the Sportscenter Top 10 Plays of the week with his 87 yard punt return TD to close out a 21 point Sun Devil 2nd Quarter.  Cameron Marshall closed out the game for the Sun Devils with 82 yards rushing and 2 TDs.  Marshall’s 37 yard TD was highlighted by plowing through and over 5 Beaver defenders.  On the defensive side, two Sun Devils shined.  With the loss of Onyeali to the knee injury, Jamarr Jarrett stepped up and owned the Oregon State offensive tackles.  Jarrett finished this game with 4 tackles (3 for loss), 2 sacks, and 1 forced fumble.  Alden Darby saw more time on the field in a nickel / linebacker position and finished the game with 5 tackles and 2 interceptions.  The Sun Devils moved to 2-0 in Pac12 play.

ASU at Utah
35 – 14  Win

The Devils traveled to Salt Lake for their first Pac12 road game of the season, and they rudely welcomed the Utes to BCS conference football with a 35-14 victory.  This was a close game for a bit until ASU forced 3 turnovers in less than 6 minutes of play, spanning the third and fourth quarters, to open the flood gates and secure the victory.  Overall, the defense forced 5 turnovers for a second straight game which led to 25 unanswered points.  The Utah Utes game planned to stop Marshall and Miles as they put most of their hybrid defense in the box.  Well, that did not work as Brock found Sr. WRs Gerrell Robinson and Mike Willie all day long.  Robinson had 7 catches for 101 yards and Willie had 7 receptions for 98 yards and 2 TDs.  Eddie Elder led the defense with 9 tackles and 1 interception.  The Sun Devils moved to 3-0 in Pac12 play.

ASU at Oregon
41 – 27  Loss

The #18 Sun Devils traveled to the #8 Oregon Ducks and lost 41-27 in a match-up highlighted by the ESPN GameDay crew.  The game couldn’t have started better for the Devils as Colin Parker forced a fumbler on the first Duck possession, and Osweiler found Robinson in the corner of the endzone for a 7-0 lead.  The teams traded scores to make it a 14-7 game, but the Devils started to commit penalties and make mistakes.   A huge interception toward the end of the 2nd quarter put all the momentum toward Oregon – along with the 4 personal fouls.  The Sun Devils committed  95 yards worth of penalties.  Oregon outscored the Devils 20-10 in the second half as the Ducks rolled 269 rushing yards.   The Sun Devils moved to 3-1 in Pac12 play.

ASU vs Colorado
48- 14  Win

Homecoming started off with a bang as the Sun Devils jumped to a 21-0 1st quarter lead.  ASU rolled up 31 by half time in front of 53,168 at Frank Kush Field.  Overall, the Devils put up 522 total yards.  Cameron Marshall led the offense with 14 carries for 114 yards and 3 TDs.  The real Vontaze Burfict showed up to this game with 9 total tackles (2 solo, 7 assist, 0.5 sack).  Burfict was flying around like the Burfict from last season, and he led an amazing 3rd quarter, 4 play, goal line stand.  The Sun Devils moved to 4-1 in Pac12 play.
