Outside the Tines with Amanda

The Devils Den is pleased to welcome Amanda Blagg to its staff this fall.   As an ASU alum and devoted Sun Devil football fan, she has been to nearly every home game and made several road game trips during the past 16 seasons. That’s a lot of tailgates, game day outfit choices and pre game preparation.  With Outside the Tines, Amanda aims to bring you ideas and advice on fun off field topics including fashion, food and tailgate parties ASU style to get you and your Devil group ready for the game.

If you’re not lucky enough to have a boss who accepts Todd Graham’s letter excusing you from work Thursday afternoon, you will be looking for a fun way to celebrate in the short time between work and Thursday night’s match-up against UCLA.

When game day falls on a Saturday, it’s easy to spend hours at a great tailgate and in future articles, I’ll give you foolproof ways to pull off fun pre-game parties every week. Thursday night games pose tailgating challenges. Despite Coach Todd Graham’s recent jokes encouraging employers to let ticket holders leave work early for Thursday night’s match up against UCLA, the reality is that the 7pm kickoff leaves little time for tailgating after work. This week, I encourage you to check out one of many happening spots near Sun Devil Stadium for your pre-game fun.

Places to see and be seen for good eats and drinks before the UCLA game Thursday night:

  • Devils on Mill Tailgate Party: 4:30-7:30pm; Devils on Mill, the official ASU tailgate block party, at Sixth Street and Mill Avenue is a place to be before the game for live music, food, games and giveaways. This fun event includes free carnival style games, a ferris wheel, activities and a Lil’ Devils Zone for kids with face painting and tailgate style games.
  • Macayo’s Depot Cantina: My personal favorite of the Macayo’s locations; traditional Mexican food, great patio with plenty of seating, less busy parking area from the Mill Ave. hotspots; good for all ages, families
  • Gordon Biersch: Traditional American menu; specialty garlic fries are great, but don’t forget the mints; good for all ages
  • World of Beer: In line with it’s name, a huge selection of beers on tap; busier party feel atmosphere; bar food; adult crowd
  • Zipps Sports Grill: Traditional sports bar; American bar fare; great place to watch the game if you don’t have tickets; good for all ages, families
  • Buffalo Wild Wings: Traditional sports bar; American bar fare, and aptly named, with a large selection of wing sauces; great place to watch the game if you don’t have tickets; good for all ages, families
  • Hooters: Traditional bar fare and pretty standard beer offerings but let’s be honest, you’re likely choosing Hooters for the food
  • Rula Bula: Traditional Irish Restaurant and Pub; lower key atmosphere, great beer selection, good for all ages, families

And, if you’re really in a rush before the game, there are plenty of places to grab a quick eat: Fatburger, Firehouse Subs, Jimmy John’s, Panda Express, Port of Subs, Slices Pizza, Steak ’n Shake, Subway and Which Wich are just some of the many options. Hopefully, you’ve planned for pre-game cocktails appropriately if you only have time to grab a quick meal, since you’ll miss out on the pre game drinking vibe the other restaurants and bars offer.

No matter your choice for pre-game fun before Sun Devil fans Blackout the Bruins, be sure to get to Sun Devil Stadium for kickoff vs No. 11 UCLA. Bring your cheering voice and your Sun Devil spirit. Oh, and wear black!

About Amanda Blagg

Amanda Blagg

Amanda is a 2002 Arizona State graduate. When she began at ASU in 1998, so began her love of Sun Devil football. She and her husband, also an ASU alum, have had football season tickets since then and travel to road games every season. They are currently raising two little Sun Devils. Her eight year old son was born a Devil; he began singing the fight song before bed when he was two. Some of her son's happiest moments have been on the field at the spring games; when Coach Graham tweeted a photo of him and when he got to meet Coach Graham at the Utah game in 2013. The Sun Devil Pride & Passion runs deeply in the Blagg family and Amanda strives to share her passion with you in Outside the Tines.
