Spring Practice News & Notes

on

Arizona State spring football has started, so lets get caught up on all the news and notes surrounding Sun Devil football:

Roster Update

Following the news that linebacker Matt Rowe was leaving the Arizona State football program, starting wide receiver Rick Smith announced his intentions to transfer. ASUDevils.com publisher Chris Karpman was first to report:

Richard Smith certainly had a roller coaster two seasons with the Sun Devils. The returning starter at the insider receiver position, Smith, had 32 receptions, 276 yards, and two touchdowns last season. While Smith made some big plays, mainly our ASU Devils Den Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays – Play #5 and ASU Devils Den Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays – Play #7, Smith had some momentum-killing drops throughout the season, along with the critical fumble against Notre Dame. This is a depth hit to the thin wide receiver core that was previewed earlier this month. Walk-on Frederick Gammage will get most of the repetitions this spring until junior college transfer Eric Lauderdale arrives on campus this summer.

Smith makes it three of  four Long Beach Poly High School signees who have transferred away from Tempe. Four Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits signed with Todd Graham’s first class at Arizona State in 2012, and three have transferred as Smith joins Rowe and wide receiver Josiah Blandin. Only starting linebacker Salamo Fiso remains with the Sun Devils.

ASUDevils.com publisher Chris Karpman was also first to report that offensive lineman Sil Ajawara would not be with the football program in 2014:

Ajawara would have served as experienced depth along the offensive line in 2014. Ajawara, a guard who battled tackle Tyler Sulka for a starting spot last fall, had a difficult path to playing time in 2014. The Sun Devils have tremendous depth at the guard position with returning starters Jamil Douglas and Vi Teofilo, along with second team members Christian Westerman and Stephon McCray.

Coaching Staff Changes

Arizona State has hired Kenny Dillingham as its Offensive Quality Control Coach according to his twitter account. Previously, Dillingham was a coach at Scottsdale Chaparral High School.

Arizona State announced that John Wrenn will retire as Assistant Athletics Director of Football Operations and High School Relations. Wrenn was the architect of the Chandler Hamilton football program which won two state titles in his eight years prior to joining the Arizona State program.

Camp T

Arizona State football announced the dates for Camp Tontozona 2014! Nothing says Arizona State football like Camp T, so escape the summer desert heat and make your reservations now for Payson! The scrimmage will be on Saturday, August 16.

Bowl Rings

Graduate assistant offensive coach Aaron Pflugrad posted a picture of the 2013 rings to Twitter:

Imagine what the rings would look like if the team won the Pac-12 and went to the Rose Bowl! If you have any thoughts about rings, Camp T, coaches, or spring practice, please don’t hesitate to contact us on Twitter or Facebook and we will talk about it on the next podcast.
