Sun Devils Part of Super Bowl History as of Late

on

Much of the talk this week in the Valley centered around the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks inhabiting the Sun Devils and Cardinals facilities as part of their preparation for Super Bowl XLIX in Glendale.  Mix that in with tales of the friendship of between Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and Todd Graham, and you could start to notice people digging for story lines anywhere they could find them that involved ASU football in one way or another due to the fact neither team employed an active player on its roster from the school.

Former Sun Devil standout Zach Miller went down for the season early on for the Seahawks.  While he played his last game for the team in late September, he wasn’t officially placed on Injured Reserve until early November when it was determined his recovery from ankle surgery would keep him out longer than originally expected.

Prideful Sun Devil fans will be looking for any bit of leverage in conversations about the schools involvement on Super Bowl Sunday.  With that in mind, it’s helpful to point out each of the last six Super Bowl winners had those that wore the maroon and gold during their college careers (albeit some more impactful than others).  Should you the reader be put to the test on the couch on Sunday, you’ll have some ammunition historically while watching the likes of Rob Gronkowski, Richard Sherman, LaGarrette Blount, Shane Vereen, and Patrick Chung represent the rest of the Pac-12 schools on the field.

2013 TE Zach Miller

Started 12 games during 2013 for the Seahawks.  Caught 33 passes and scored five times in the regular season and caught one ball in the win over the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.

2012 OLB Terrell Suggs

After starting just 8 games in the regular season due to injury, Suggs came on like gang busters in the Divisional Playoffs recording 10 tackles and 2 sacks in a come from behind 38-35 win in double overtime.  He recorded a tackle in his first ever appearance in Super Bowl XLVII.

2011 CB Justin Tryon

Playing on his third team in as many seasons, the former Sun Devil defensive back Tryon appeared in three games during the 2011 season for the Giants, but was inactive for Super Bowl XLVI against the Patriots.

2010 RB Dimitri Nance

Appeared in 12 games for the Packers as a rookie during his first and only NFL season.  Much like his former Sun Devil teammate Justin Tryon, he was inactive for the Packers during Super Bowl XLV.

2009 Jason Kyle

A former fourth round pick of the Seahawks back in 1995, the former Sun Devil linebacker who lead the Pac-10 in tackles his senior year went on to have a successful career in the NFL after transitioning along the way to a long snapper.  In 2009, his fifteenth as a pro, he appeared in every regular season game for the saints Saints.

2008 OT Marvell Smith

The second round pick of the Steelers back in 2000, he started each of the five games he played in during the regular season protecting Big Ben’s blind side.
