Utah vs. ASU Post Game Overview


Utah vs. ASU – November 1st, 2014

It was the first time under Todd Graham that the Sun Devils played a game in overtime and they made it count.

No. 15 Arizona State defeated No. 18 Utah at Sun Devil Stadium Saturday evening 19-16 on a game-winning, 36-yard field goal by Zane Gonzalez in the first overtime period. This was the first overtime game ASU has played since 2011 against Missouri.

Below is a look at a brief quarter breakdown and final statistics:

1st Quarter Notes:

  • ASU’s defense came out hot, allowing 0 points and 21 total yards.
  • Zane Gonzalez with 2 field goals from 20 and 45 yards out.
  • ASU’s offense had 149 total yards, 92 of those came on the ground.
  • ASU lead Utah 6-0 at the end of the 1st quarter

2nd Quarter Notes:

  • ASU’s defense was strong again, only allowing 71 yards and having Utah settle for 2 field goals.
  • Utah’s 2 field goals were from 50 and 36 yards out by Andy Phillips.
  • Taylor Kelly with a 6 yd touchdown pass to Jalen Strong was the result of a 5 play, 75 yard drive.
  • ASU lead Utah 13-6 at the end of the 2nd quarter.

3rd Quarter Notes:

  • Utah came out hot and scored on the opening drive on a 4 yard pass to Devontae Booker from Travis Wilson.
  • Penalties hurt ASU as they had 4 for 40 yards in the 3rd quarter alone.
  • Utah lead ASU 16-13 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

4th Quarter Notes:

  • Strong defense for both sides as only a total of 3 points were scored in the final period.
  • Zane Gonzalez with a game tying field goal near the end  from 30 yards out.
  • ASU and Utah were tied at 16 at the end of the 4th quarter.

Overtime Notes:

  • Utah did not get a first down. Phillips missed wide right on his first attempt but was canceled due to timeout call by Utah. On his second try, he missed wide left.
  • ASU ran three times to set up field goal attempt. Gonzalez makes the game-winning, 36 yard field goal.
  • ASU beat Utah 19-16.
