“ASU Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays” – Play #7

on

Hanukkah and Christmas celebrations of 2013 have passed, but Kwanzaa is on-going and everyone is preparing for a New Year. We continue our month long celebration of the 2013 Sun Devil season with the latest installment of our “ASU Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays“.

Play #7

The Sun Devils spent Halloween night in Pullman, Washington. Washington State University is a big part of this small town in Eastern Washington, and the school was excited for this Thursday night ESPN match-up against Arizona State. The school was so excited that they cancelled afternoon classes for the game. Washington State, under the pirate head coach Mike Leach, was seeking to defeat its second Pac-12 South opponent after beating USC 10-7 in LA.

The Sun Devils came out on fire with a 21 points first quarter to quiet the Cougars home crowd. The home crowd sparked some life from a Cougar touchdown early in the second quarter, but Taylor Kelly led the Sun Devil offense back. At 6:22 of the second quarter and with Arizona State on their 49, the “ASU Devils Den Holiday Party 12 Pack of Plays” Play #7 took place.

Wide receiver Richard Smith beats his defender on a fly route down the field side. Kelly throws it deep, but the ball is a little bit behind Smith. Smith slowed down, and his defender starts to hang all over him for defensive pass interference. However, Smith is able to bat the ball up in the air, then the defensive back taps the ball up again, and Smith secures the ball and runs into the endzone for a touchdown. The 51 yard touchdown reception was a great individual effort by Smith who was gaining the confidence of his coaches and his quarterback after a rough start to the season.

With this touchdown, Arizona State went ahead for good. Wazzu Cougar fans left the stadium to attend their Halloween parties, and Arizona State fans felt better about their team becoming a strong road team.
